A Man in A Million Million

Charles Conway was born on the 16th February 1923 in Castleisland Co Kerry

He was one of eight children born to Michael and Jo-Hannah, his wonderful Mom and Dad. Throughout
his childhood he would deliver telegrams, fix bicycles and sell newspapers after sunday mass, all to
make a few bob, to give to his mother. He was a great worker especially in the "Bog" cutting and
footing "turf". Then he would go down to the home of Dr Rice and dig and set rows of potatoes. It
was all hard work but it had to be done! And he enjoyed it.

As he got older he accompanied his Father "Mikie" The Bellman to advertise local events such as, a
sale of cattle, a sum of money lost or found, a picture show or a play or a dance in the Carnegie
Hall. Which brings us to his social life in Catleisland; he was drawn to the music coming from the
Carnegie Hall, but did not have the money to pay to go into the dance. So he would dance in the
entrance of the Hall. He soon became the Michael Flattery of his day. He left his beloved
Castleisland in the mid 40s and arrived in Lakenheath in Suffolk to work with many other Irishmen in
the aerodrome. He headed for Yorkshire after that and settled in Huddersfield.

He was an indoor crane driver at Hopkinson and Holmes and was actually poached from Holmes to work
for Holsets Engineering, he worked in bay one and was very precise and accurate in his work and
thank god he never had a mishap when lifting many many loads. He is still spoken about today as "The
best Crane Driver". When he retired from Holsets, he then went to work at Huddersfield Royal
Infirmary as a Theatre Porter. It gave him great satisfaction and had a laugh and joke with everyone
especially the children, they loved him.

Dancing and singing was his passion. He danced at St. Patrick's hall before it was actually open to
the public he had a multitude of partners queuing up to dance with him. I'm sure that everyone who
knew him will have fond memories of him. Michael, Hannah, Charles and the late George have lots and
lots of childhood memories. On many occasions they would recall all of them getting into bed Michael
at one side and Hannah at the other. George and charles actually lying on the top of him, each one
trying to get as close as possible to him. He would then say "I'll put you all in my pocket". How
he'd would tell them little stories and sing to them at bed time.

He was truly an Amazing, Loving, Caring and Devoted Father.
More than special Graandad Conway and great Grandad Glasses.

God bless you and keep you Charles Conway
